AAR’s Telair Converts Thai Airways B747-400 Passenger Aircraft to Freighter with Main and Lower Deck Cargo Loading Systems
Innovative features enhance safety, diagnostics and fuel efficiency
MIESBACH, Germany – AAR (NYSE: AIR) announced its Telair cargo systems business was selected by Thai Airways International to provide both a main deck and full lower deck cargo handling system for the recent conversion of two Boeing 747-400 passenger aircraft to dedicated freighters, under its Boeing 747-400BCF program. The first Thai Airways freighter entered into service in April 2012 and the second in May 2012.
For the main deck, a unique centerline loading system was added to provide additional revenue capability. The lower deck system includes supplemental walkway panels with enhanced safety features for loading personnel. Both main and lower deck systems feature unique intelligent power drive units that sense and react to operating conditions in ways that minimize system and aircraft downtime. An interactive, on-board diagnostic system will assist with scheduling of preventive maintenance.
“Adding a complete modernization of the lower deck cargo system into the conversion package will allow the aircraft to continue to operate for at least another decade,” said Loet Vudhijaya, Director, Maintenance Control Center, Thai Airways International. “The benefits include lower maintenance costs and fuel consumption as well as the ability to generate additional revenue.”
To date, 49 Boeing passenger aircraft have been converted with Telair cargo handling systems, distinguished by their low-weight and highly robust designs.
